When a friend or loved one dies by suicide, overdose or mental health fatality, their life story can become focused on their death rather than the contributions and meaning of their life. JFS imagined and created a tender memorial service held in December of each year to coincide with the Jewish season of light, Hanukkah.  Death by suicide or overdose involves a complex bereavement journey for family and friend “survivors,” and Bright Stars honors the multiple dimensions of grieving such a loss. With a focus on the life of the deceased rather than their death, survivors can remember and hold close the times when their loved one experienced health and wellbeing.  Each survivor is also given the chance to include a biography and photo of their loved one in a shared Bright Stars memorial booklet.
